Huawei Mate 9, the company’s new giant premium smartphone with a Leica dual-rear camera setup, has been officially launched at a special event in Munich, Germany. The highlight of the Huawei Mate 9 is the new artificial intelligence feature which will learn the daily habits of the user. Huawei also launched a new fitness tracker. The Huawei Mate 9 comes with a price tag of Eur 699, which is around Rs 51,000 on conversion.

Huawei’s Mate 9 will rely on machine learning to ensure the device understands a user’s daily habits like which apps are used more frequently and it will put them within easy reach. Huawei says also machine learning takes place on the phone itself rather than the cloud for privacy and security of the user. “It learns how you use your phone,” said Arne Herkelmann, Huawei’s European head of handset portfolio and planning.

Huawei is not the only manufacturer focusing on machine learning and AI to boost a smartphone’s capability. Google’s Pixel is all about the Assistant, which is exclusive to the device and will learn a user’s habits. Apple’s iPhone is also relying more on machine learning to give users access to apps they use regularly, organise photos based on trips, locations, etc. Samsung recently acquired Viv, a new AI-based assistant by the former co-creators of Siri, which is now part of Apple’s iOS.
